It is my privilege and profound honor to introduce and celebrate the remarkable career of Professor Trevor G. Bond as he receives the PROMS Lifetime Achievement Award.
For decades, Professor Bond has been a tireless champion for the practical application of the Rasch model. He saw that for the human sciences to be truly scientific, we needed objective measurement—not just "a bunch of numbers." Through his seminal and best-selling book, Applying the Rasch Model: Fundamental Measurement in the Human Sciences, and now in its fourth edition, he demystified complex psychometric principles. He made Rasch measurement accessible, practical, and indispensable for researchers across education, psychology, linguistics, and health care. His work has empowered countless practitioners to build evidence-based, scientific measurement that solve real-world problems.
But Professor Bond is not only a pioneer in methodology; he is a visionary community builder. Recognizing the need to foster measurement capacity in Eastern and Southeast Asia, he instigated the Pacific Rim Objective Measurement Symposium (PROMS) in 2005, which has blossomed into a vital, annual international forum. Through PROMS, Professor Bond created a collaborative network that transcends borders, bringing together scholars from across the Pacific Rim and beyond to share knowledge, elevate research standards, and promote measurement practices that contribute to societal well-being.
Throughout his career, Prof. Bond has always been an educator at heart. He is known not just for his academic rigor, but for his warmth, his approachability, and his magic moments—showing colleagues the hidden truths in their own data through Rasch analysis.
